Tang Xiao'ou, the professor at the Chinese University of Hong Kong who transformed his computer science laboratory into the multibillion-dollar artificial intelligence leader SenseTime, has passed away at the age of 55.

According to a Saturday announcement by SenseTime on its official WeChat account, Tang succumbed to an illness close to midnight on December 15. The nature of his illness was not disclosed.
