The secret lies in Taiwan's dominance of silicon semiconductor production, making over half the chips powering the world, as reported by Rupert Wingfield-Hayes for BBC News.
Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSMC), its largest manufacturer, ranks as the 9th most valuable business globally. Taiwan's newest chip factory, the nearly $20-billion Fab 18 in southern Taiwan, is set to produce three-nanometer chips for next-generation iPhones.
China, fearing potential isolation from advanced chips, is investing billions to compete with Taiwan.
The island's chip factories, some of the cleanest places on earth, operate with well-guarded manufacturing details. Taiwan's key strategy is never to compete with its customers.
