Volkswagen is recalling over 260,000 compact cars in the United States due to a potential fire risk stemming from a pump located inside the gas tank, as reported by Peter Valdes-Dapena for CNN.

The affected cars include various Volkswagen Golf, Golf GTI, Golf Sportwagen, Jetta, and Audi A3s from the 2015 through 2020 model years.
Not all model years are included for each model, and only front-wheel-drive versions are affected, excluding all-wheel-drive variants. Audi, VW's luxury brand, shares closely related models with Volkswagen.
The recall addresses an issue with an improperly installed seal around a suction pump near the gas tank, which could allow fuel to accumulate in the vapor trap system. This accumulation of fuel could potentially lead to leakage from the vehicle.
While Volkswagen has stated that no fires have occurred due to this problem so far, it plans to begin mailing letters to affected vehicle owners in mid-April. Owners will be instructed to bring their vehicles to a dealership for a pump replacement at no cost.
