Jake Coyle reported for the Associated Press (AP) that while 2023's grosses improved compared to 2022, they fell approximately $2 billion short of pre-pandemic levels. The New Year's weekend box office lacked a blockbuster, with a variety of films seeking success.
"Wonka," the musical featuring Timothée Chalamet as a young Willy Wonka, led the box office in its third weekend, accumulating an estimated $24 million from Friday through Sunday and $31.8 million including the Monday holiday.
The film surpassed competition like "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom," which struggled in its second weekend. Overall, Hollywood experienced a mix of successes and challenges in 2023.
