President Gustavo Petro of Colombia has agreed to allow U.S. military planes to deport unauthorized immigrants from the U.S. to his country after President Trump threatened Colombia with high tariffs and sanctions, The New York Times reported.

The clash underscored Trump’s willingness to use economic pressure to force compliance, as countries around the world brace for the mass deportations he has promised. Colombia’s trade with the U.S. amounts to only $12 billion annually.
Petro stated that the U.S. should ensure humane treatment of Colombian deportees. The swift concession is likely to encourage Trump to use similar tactics against other nations.
Several governments have taken note and are seeking guidance on how to navigate the new administration’s policies. In an effort to counter Trump’s aggressive stance, Panama has signed a contract with a team of Washington lobbyists with connections to the Trump administration.
Before Trump’s inauguration, Denmark had already begun searching for well-connected lobbyists to push back against his renewed interest in acquiring Greenland.
