Dr. Maria Excelsis M. Orden, Director of URC and one of the project leaders of the approved proposals, said two of the projects were approved for funding in 2020, but the budget was only released in January 2021, while two are new projects for 2021, according to a CLSU newsletter.

The first project titled “Increasing Productivity and Income from Crop Production in Marginalized Farms in Zambales through Promotion and Adoption of Appropriate Technologies (Phase 1)” was earmarked with PhP1.5 million.

Dr. Orden said the project aims to disseminate appropriate technologies to rehabilitate and make ash, lahar, and black sand-laden areas productive to generate income for farmers. It is an offshoot of the project conducted in Botolan, Zambales from 2017 to 2020 by CLSU and then President Ramon Magsaysay State University (PRMSU).

She added that the funding was from the Philippine Council for Industry, Energy and Emerging Technology Research and Development (PCIEERD) and in collaboration with the Provincial Agriculture Office and the Local Government Unit (LGU) of Botolan.

The project generated technologies such as: 1) use of quality seeds and seedlings; 2) crop identification based on land suitability; 3) appropriate nutrient management by using a combination of organic, inorganic, and foliar fertilizer; and 4) enhancement of water holding capacity thru organic fertilization and use of crop residues as mulching.

In addition to Botolan, the new project will also disseminate the technologies in Catillejos and San Marcelino, Zambales, two towns/LGUs experiencing the same problem, that is, soils laden with lahar, ash, and black sand.

Dr. Orden also said that three techno-demo farms will be established; training on the appropriate technologies for problem soils will be conducted for farmers and technicians, and IEC materials will be prepared for distribution to enhance dissemination.
