The New York Attorney General is suing former President Donald Trump, his adult kids, and their family real estate company, capping off a three-year investigation into what her investigators deemed rampant business and tax fraud, Joe Pagliery reported for Daily Beast.

The lawsuit, revealed at a press conference with New York AG Letitia James Wednesday morning, seeks to block the Trumps from serving as business executives and slap the Trump Organization with a whopping $250 million in fines.

The office has also passed along evidence to federal prosecutors in Manhattan and the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) “for criminal investigation,” according to a statement.

“For too long, powerful, wealthy people in this country have operated as if the rules do not apply to them. Donald Trump stands out as among the most egregious examples of this misconduct,” a prepared statement from James said.

Last month, the former president took to his Truth Social platform to launch a barrage of attacks on James, branding her a "racist" attorney general who is "trying to 'get Trump.'"

James is conducting "a continuation of the greatest Witch Hunt in US history!" Trump wrote. "My great company, and myself, are being attacked from all sides. Banana Republic!" Raw Story reported midnight of Sept. 22.

The lawsuit marks one of the biggest legal blows for Trump since he left office in January 2021. Trump is considering running again for president in 2024. The FBI conducted a court-approved search of Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida on Aug. 8 as part of a criminal investigation into his handling of presidential records including classified material.

Trump also faces a criminal investigation in Georgia over his efforts to overturn the 2020 election results, the Associated Press (AP) reported. James' civil probe is separate from a criminal tax fraud probe against the Trump Organization by Manhattan's district attorney, Alvin Bragg.

The company is scheduled to stand trial in October, accused of paying off-the-books benefits to employees. Its former longtime chief financial officer, Allen Weisselberg, has pleaded guilty and will testify against the company. James is assisting Bragg in his criminal probe, Jonathan Stempel, Karen Freifeld, and Luc Cohen reported for Reuters.
