The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced it is closing its preliminary investigation into engine failures in 454,840 Nissan vehicles, following the automaker’s recall issued in June, Reuters reported.

The probe, initiated in December 2023, centered on reports of engine failures in certain Nissan models, which led to loss of motive power and unusual knocking noises.

NHTSA noted that in some cases, internal engine components became dislodged, puncturing the engine block and potentially causing oil leaks and fires.

A total of 1,878 incidents were reported, with 12 resulting in crashes or fires, according to the agency. Affected models included the Nissan Rogue and Altima, as well as Infiniti’s QX50 and QX55.

As part of the June recall, Nissan instructed dealers to inspect engine oil pans for metal debris.

If none is found, they will change the oil and make minor repairs. If debris is present, more extensive engine repairs—or replacements—may be necessary. Nissan has also agreed to extend the powertrain warranty on affected vehicles to 10 years or 120,000 miles.
