Only 13% of Canadian EV shoppers now say they’d consider buying a Tesla — down from 29% a year ago — marking a 55% drop and the steepest decline ever recorded for a brand in J.D. Power Canada’s annual EV Consideration Study, Automotive News' David Kennedy reported.

Tesla fell from second place in the rankings to eighth. The 2025 study surveyed 3,979 prospective Canadian car buyers during March and April.

While the report didn’t ask why interest in Tesla dropped, analysts pointed to rising political concerns.

Tesla CEO Elon Musk has drawn criticism for aligning closely with U.S. President Donald Trump, who has threatened auto tariffs on Canada and joked about annexing the country. Musk further inflamed tensions with a now-deleted February post on X that read, “Canada is not a real country.”
