Toyota Motor Corp. will develop a second battery electric vehicle (BEV) in collaboration with Subaru Corp., targeting the North American and Japanese markets starting in 2026, GlobalData reported.

The two automakers previously teamed up on the bZ4X—sold in North America as the BZ and by Subaru as the Solterra—which marked Toyota’s first BEV co-developed with Subaru.
Toyota owns a 20% stake in Subaru and is looking to deepen the partnership to accelerate its BEV transition and production capabilities.
Separate reports suggest Toyota is also considering launching a new entry-level pickup truck for the U.S. market, potentially based on the Hilux platform currently produced in Thailand.
The new model would join Toyota’s existing U.S. truck lineup, which includes the Tacoma and Tundra.
The moves come amid increased pressure on Japanese automakers to localize more production in the U.S. following the imposition of new import tariffs. Nissan recently announced similar plans with Mitsubishi Motors to co-develop vehicles for the American market.
