Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg is investing billions into the company’s AI ambitions, with the goal of developing so-called superintelligence—AI that can surpass human cognitive abilities, Daniel Howley reported for Yahoo Finance.

In a Threads post, Zuckerberg announced plans to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on massive new AI data centers across the U.S., including one expected to go online next year.

Another facility, dubbed Hyperion, will eventually scale up to support 5 gigawatts of power capacity—enough electricity to power roughly 800,000 homes.

Zuckerberg is also making major talent acquisitions. In June, Meta invested $14.3 billion in Scale AI and hired its CEO, Alexandr Wang.

The company also recruited former GitHub CEO Nat Friedman, Safe Superintelligence CEO Daniel Gross, and poached Apple’s head of AI foundation models, Ruoming Pang, according to Bloomberg.

The Wall Street Journal also reported that Meta brought on board OpenAI researchers Lucas Beyer, Alexander Kolesnikov, and Xiaohua Zhai.

These moves come as Meta works to catch up in the AI race after putting its Llama 4 “Behemoth” model on hold to improve performance in line with frontier models from OpenAI and Google.

“Mr. Zuckerberg believes it’s very important to have one of the leading models,” said Gil Luria, head of technology research at D.A. Davidson. “He’s rebuilt the team so he has the talent to do it, and he’s going to continue to invest in the compute capacity needed to make it happen.”
